I have 600SEL 1993, 70,000 miles -- babied. I thought top of the line Mercedes would be reliable for many years. The first to go was the transmission -- last year, three thousand miles ago. The car has a constant 280 milli-amp drain, which no one could trace. It drains the battery in 2-3 days, if car is not driven. Doors and trunk suction closure fails periodically, and requires disconnecting and reconnecting the battery to reset the system. The clock suddenly stopped a few months ago and the suspension has gradually weakened to none-existant. The two major problems, however, are: An oil leak, which I was informed is due to a crack in the chain casing. The second problem happened ten days ago whan I had the battery checked, the transmission suddenly stopped functionning. The dealer tells me I need a new transmission -- $8,000 plus. The original price was $132,000 plus $7,500. The only answers I got is simply -- feeling sorry for me.

Well i bought a 2000' SL600 at a Government auction, and so far I really like the car. May be it takes a drug dealer to work out all the kinks first. But every time I read a story about one of those cars, I wonder if maybe the biggest problem is unreliable techs, either at the dealer or outside shop. I feel the SL's should be the premo, the most advance and most reliable car MB makes, but what do I know. I also have a 86' 560SL and now the car is plague with leaks from old seals. Almost like an old Harley Davidson, had both so I speak from experience. I would check as many forums as possible and find another Tech who people really have great reports, not good reports, but great reports. I have a problem with the vacuum system for the gas tank, my dealer wants me to replace the gas tank, not going to happen, not till I try every trick in the book that thrown at me. I put 10,000 miles since I got the car with 60,000 mile on it. Cost me about $5000.00 getting the car back in reliable condition. So for I am happy.
