Crack / hole in driver's seat foundation

The plastic foundation / frame of the driver's seat of my 2005 SL55 cracked and opened up a hole about 1 inch tall by 3 inches wide.

I don't know how it happened, but the service manager says it's from normal wear and is expensive to replace (hasn't yet quoted parts/labor).

Has anyone had or seen this problem with any Mercedes seat frame?
