Mercedes Benz Owners

Exclusive Owners Community

I do not own a Mercedes, but was looking at a 97 E420 today. Not knowing much about MBs except they have had a good reputation, I wanted to do some research on-line. Thanks for sharing your experiences here.
The 97 is gorgeous, but after reading on line for a couple of hours I believe I'll take a pass.
My (don't laugh) 94 Olds LSS has a horrible Consumer Reports rating, but it has well over 270,000 miles and still runs great and has had few problems (VERY few compared to what I'm reading here). The 1998 Olds Touring Sedan that preceded it had 350,000+ miles when donated to our church - still ran beautifully. Both Oldsmobiles had/have original engine, transaxle, and A/C.
I'm not gloating, just trying to understand why cars that cost $40 - $50K new are such nightmares to own. Maybe I'll just get the LSS painted and see how far it will go.

I know this post is a year old, but...

Yes Mercedes didn't fair well after the mid 90s because of the Japanese luxury imports. They had to make cut backs in some areas to save on cost to bring the prices down. Most common area is low grade materials in the wire harnesses. If can find a 91-94 model that has been well maintained they are rock solid vehicles. I have owned a 93 190e, 93 400e, 96 C280 and now a 90 300ce. All very solid vehicles that needed minor attention. The 96 C280 already had the wire harness replaced before purchase.
